Beacon of Maritime
History

Lighthouses have guided mariners for thousands of years and have long symbolized romance, genius and awe. The earliest inhabitants depended on the sea and estuaries for food and transportation.

Americans first lighthouse was constructed of stone on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor in 1716. Florida's first coastal navigational aid was a 1586 Spanish watch tower in St. Augustine. The first true lighthouse was a 73 foot harbor light built there in 1824. The offshore towers proved vulnerable to storms. The St. Augustine lighthouse was destroyed by storms.

A 165-foot tower was built at St. Augustine in 1874. The black and white tower is Florida's only spiral-banded lighthouse and it contains an original first order Fresnel lens. Six flights of stairs offer visitors access to a spectacular view, and the keepers restored quarters give a glimpse into the often solitary life of the coast's human sentinels. Automated in 1955, the St. Augustine light flashes every 30 seconds.
