of Maritime Americans first lighthouse was constructed of stone on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor in 1716. Florida's first coastal navigational aid was a 1586 Spanish watch tower in St. Augustine. The first true lighthouse was a 73 foot harbor light built there in 1824. The offshore towers proved vulnerable to storms. The St. Augustine lighthouse was destroyed by storms. A 165-foot tower was built at St. Augustine in 1874. The black and white tower is Florida's only spiral-banded lighthouse and it contains an original first order Fresnel lens. Six flights of stairs offer visitors access to a spectacular view, and the keepers restored quarters give a glimpse into the often solitary life of the coast's human sentinels. Automated in 1955, the St. Augustine light flashes every 30 seconds.
